Sooner or later, we all end up storing duplicate media files and duplicate documents on our computers inadvertently. Duplicate File Remover is a robust and easy-to-use tool to help us get rid of all those unnecessary files in just 6 easy steps. Its wizard-driven interface is suitable for all kinds of users, and all searches can be easily customized to fit our specific needs and preferences.
The first thing is to determine the type of files we want the program to scan. We can tell the program to search for all duplicates regardless of their type, or narrow the search to – among others – executable files, documents, music or video files, phone file formats, game console files, or any combination of the categories provided. Then, once you have checked the folders or the drives you wanted the program to scan (both local and network, fixed and removable), you are presented with the search parameters.
The third step is probably the one that requires more of your attention. Here you are provided with a set of options that may help you narrow your search, and thus refine it and make it more accurate. You can search for identical names and/or identical contents and size, you can include any (or all) of the four plug-ins provided. These plug-ins perform specific tasks over specific file types – HtmlTagReader will find duplicates among HTML files, Mp3TagReader will do the same among MP3 audio files, ImageReader will find duplicate images in various formats (JPEG, PNG, BMP, etc.), and TextReader will identify any duplicate TXT, LOG, INF, Java, and other text-based files on your computer. Then you can apply a few filters based on the files’ date and time, size, and attributes, and set the folders and subfolders that should be ignored during the search (such as system folders, for instance).
Duplicate File Remover will then build a so-called “Interim File List” organized by extension, which will allow you to see at a glance which file type is taking most of your disk space and why. The fifth step is the one that will show the actual list of files considered to be duplicates by the program, and provide you with various actions to be applied to the files selected. You can simply delete them or copy/move them to a different location. The sixth and final step will offer you to open the detailed report the program has been creating for you through the various stages of the entire process.
